Why was Only Saidin Tainted?
In the early days of the World of Warcraft, there were two types of servers: “normal” servers and “player vs. player” (PvP) servers. Normal servers were intended for PvE (player vs. environment) content, while PvP servers were focused on… well, PvP combat. However, there was a problem with this arrangement.
Players who wanted to experience both PvE and PvP content had to either create characters on both types of server or transfer their characters back and forth between them – a process that was both time-consuming and expensive.
To solve this problem, Blizzard created a new type of server: the “PvE/PvP” server. On these servers, players could choose whether they wanted to focus on PvE or PvP content – or do a little bit of both, if they so desired.
However, there was one catch: all characters on PvE/PvP servers were automatically flagged for PvP combat. In other words, if you didn’t want to be attacked by other players while questing in peaceable areas, you had to stay away from such areas altogether – which made life difficult for those who just wanted to experience the game’s storyline without having to worry about being killed by another player every five minutes.
