US criticizes Israeli attack on mourners during Shireen Abu Akleh’s funeral


The US criticized Friday’s Israeli assaults on mourners and pallbearers throughout Palestinian-American Shireen Abu Akleh’s funeral procession in Jerusalem as “deeply disturbing.”

“We regret the intrusion of what should have been a peaceful procession. We’ve urged respect for the funeral procession, the mourners and the family at this sensitive time,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated.

As her casket was being carried, a whole lot of Palestinians have been seen hoisting the Palestinian flag and chanting.

Shortly after, Israeli forces rushed on the mourners, attacking them with batons, together with the pallbearers and resulting in the coffin dropping.

“This is a day where we should all be marking, including everyone there, the memory of a remarkable journalist who lost her life,” Psaki stated.

Abu Akleh, a reporter for Al Jazeera, was shot and killed this week whereas reporting on an Israeli navy raid within the occupied West Bank’s Jenin. Palestine and her outlet have accused the Israeli navy of killing her.

Video footage confirmed Abu Akleh, 51, carrying a flak jacket with “Press” clearly seen.

Israel stated it was Palestinian gunmen who have been accountable for her dying earlier than later backtracking and saying an investigation was going to be carried out.

Previous Israeli investigations into killed Palestinian reporters have failed to succeed in a verdict. But the US has stated Israel may perform an intensive investigation. Palestine has stated it is not going to cooperate with the Israeli investigation and stated it could not hand over remnants of the bullet that killed Abu Akleh.
