Callum Shinkwin has wrestled the lead away from Julien Guerrier and can take a one-shot lead into the ultimate spherical in Wales.
The Englishman carded seven birdies and a single bogey in a surprising 65 on Saturday – the joint-lowest spherical of the week to date – to get to 11 underneath par and overtake Guerrier on the summit.
Frenchman Guerrier started the day with a two-stroke benefit and had pulled three clear by the flip courtesy of three birdies on the entrance aspect.
But as he stood nonetheless, mixing one birdie with one bogey on the again 9 to signal for a third-round 68, Shinkwin birdied the eleventh, thirteenth, fifteenth and 18th to hit the entrance.
The duo had clear daylight between them and their nearest challenger – Scotland’s Connor Syme, who was on 5 underneath after his 68.
Shinkwin has turn out to be used to enjoying nicely at Celtic Manor, having completed fourth and joint-eighth in his final two appearances there.
And he was a cheerful man after impressing once more on the 2010 Ryder Cup venue.
After producing one of many pictures of the match to arrange a close-range birdie on the 18th, Shinkwin instructed the DP World Tour web site: “I’m delighted, 65 was a really good score today.
“I’m enjoying rather well and did not make any errors and I’ve come out of it with the lead.”
Daniel Hillier of New Zealand is four over par and compatriot Josh Geay six over.
Australia’s Dimitrius Papadatos is eight over.
